BRIAN Weisby works with some of the world’s top athletes, including Paula Radcliffe, Sonia O’Sullivan and Denise Lewis.
As a sports nutritionist he gives them advice on what they should eat and drink - how much and when. But alongside this Brian has developed a range of products designed to help athletes meet their nutritional needs.
Brian said that when he was first approached by a cyclist who wanted help with their diet that they did not know how to eat to fuel their body properly. And he believes that athletes need to be more nutritionally minded.
Brian says: "Nutrition is about knowing enough about your body to affect your metabolism and to get the best out of the talent your body has. Denise Lewis had all the ability to be World Champion but she didn’t know how to get the best out of her body."
And a body that is not correctly fuelled is far more likely to breakdown, and find it harder to recover.
Brian says: "The more you train, the more you damage your body. You are breaking the muscles down and putting pressure on the immune system. A doctor may say that you have a viral infection but the problem is that you have a depleted immune system."
As well as working with athletes Brian has also worked with people fighting serious illness to help them boost their health.
His series of products is based on the principle that he does not believe most people’s bodies are properly fuelled and that it can be hard to achieve proper nutritional intake even using some supplements. He says: "Most multi-vitamin products on the market are made by drug companies. The problem is your body doesn’t recognise the chemicals. If your body can’t identify the vitamins it can’t use them.
"You have to put vitamins in as the same structure as they occur in nature. But it’s expensive to be able to produce that."
His supplement range aims to tackle this. The products in Brian’s range are:
BeWell B.Active (previously Breakthrough Active)
THIS drink is designed to support the immune system of active people. It is to help people resist infection and prevent a build up of pollutants in the body. As a normal dosage this should be taken as a 25g scoop dissolved in half a pint of drink each day before bed or after training.
BeWell B.Flex (previously Nutricol)
THIS is intended to help repair and improve the mobility of the joints. It contains nutrients including Glucosamine and MSM, these help the joints recover and rebuild after training. For normal dosage this should be taken as a l0g scoop dissolved in l00ml of water each day.
BeWell B.Gain (Previously Nutriplex)
B-GAIN is the protein drink of the range, to help produce cell growth and support the body’s building and recovery after hard training. It contains ingredients to help muscle resynthesis, and to neutralise acid build-up in muscles which can help prevent pain and inflammation. Normal intake is 60g in 500g of drink taken after exercise.
BeWell B.Fuel (previously Turbo Pulse)
B-FUEL is a drink designed to help maintain hydration and energy levels during exercise. The drink is made to help you keep your blood glucose levels during exercise and is made in a way that makes the key ingredients easier for the body to absorb. This should be mixed with 50g of powder to 500m1 of water and drunk before and during exercise.
BeWell BLoad (previously Synergen)
THIS is the high-carbohydrate drink of the range to help keep a steady flow of glucose in the blood. One serving is 75g of B-Load in 500ml of water with a recommended three servings a day taken in the three days up to competition.
